John Lee papers, 1871-1905.

The papers consist of correspondence, property documents, and corporate papers documenting business affairs in Colfax County, New Mexico, and Bent County, Colorado, as well as mining in Colorado and New Mexico. Most of the correspondence is between John Lee and his attorneys concerning Lee's property and the Springer Mercantile & Banking Company. Letters from the 1860s and 1870s touch on New Mexico politics. There are documents recording the transfer of land, mining claims, and horses in Colfax County and Bent County. Corporate papers for the Grant County Pipe Line, Real Estate & Cattle Company, Southwestern Copper Company, and Springer Mercantile & Banking Company are fragmentary. Although Lee's name does not appear in the County Pipe Line or Southwestern papers, these companies were run by the same group of people in Grant County. The collections also contains reports on gold mines in Gilpin County, Colorado, copper mines in Grant County, New Mexico, and other papers relating to John Lee.
